Weekly Carnival Link Love
Published July 11th, 2008I spent quite a bit of time this week doing some quality reading around the blogosphere. I participated in the four carnivals below! As a thank you, I wanted to highlight each carnival, and write a bit about each of my faves. Enjoy!
This week, the Carnival of Personal Finance traveled to the Mighty Bargain Hunter, who chose a very appropriate and interesting American Flag theme! It was hard to decide, but these posts stood out for me:
- Cash Money Life’s insightful post about The Other America-Commentary on Food Stamps and the Economy really got me thinking. We don’t have food stamps here in Canada, but many people rely heavily on food banks and soup kitchens–I guess the difference is that there is no choice with these services. As a volunteer, I know that we do our best to provide the most balanced diet we can with the donations we get.
- Dreaming of Ferraris’ post Life is About Choices is something that I wholeheartedly buy into–making the conscious choice to be happy at look at the positive.
Squawkfox hosted a very funny and slightly risque “Bare Necessities” edition of the Festival of Frugality–I loved it! As always, it was hard to pick, but the following were my faves this week:
- Funny About Money actually witnessed someone Throwing Money in the Trash. Booo. In saving for our Galapagos Islands trip we brought $40 worth of rolled change to deposit in the bank–it’s not much compared to the whole trip–but I’ll sure be smiling about it when I’m swimming with the sea lions!
- I’ve Paid For This Twice Already’s post outlining Four Strategies to Fight the Takeout Urge is bang on. With some organization, we started doing these four things (among others) about two years ago and saw our total monthly eating out go from $150-300 a month to maybe $30. When we do get take-out now, it’s for the right reasons, and we enjoy it much more! I really wish we had Sonic here in Canada
This week the Money Hacks Carnival was hosted right at the Money Hackers Network Site! There’s always some great tips here, and these two posts are no exception:
- Frugality in the Making talks about Holiday Planning Made Easy for the Unorganized. Yup, I said holiday planning, and I’m living proof that this works. Why scramble around and battle crowds for a few weeks when you can take advantage of all of the great deals that come up over the year!
- Help My Cash Grow asks Are High-Yield Savings Accounts Still Advantageous in Today’s Economy? I think they definitely have their place like in saving for a trip, or my own version of pet insurance!
The Next 45 Years posted yet another mind-opening edition of the Personal Development Carnival . I thoroughly enjoyed these two posts:
- The Butler Project’s 7 Real Strategies That Will Help You Get Things Done, was a great read! I especially appreciated the point on getting your sleep, I notice this more the older I get.
- Chandra “Unplugged” explores What does “loving your Self” Mean? We’ve often heard that you can’t truly love others unless you love yourself–I agree–and I think that’s going to be something different for every person. This post has a few points that can get you thinking about what it means for you.
Well, that’s it for this week! Thanks again to everyone who organized these carnivals, and for taking the time to include my posts. Don’t forget to enter the Great Galapagos Contest and read about my crazy personal finance challenge before you leave the site!

Thank you for highlighting my article. I thought the reader comments were insightful and added a lot to the conversation. Unfortunately, the system is one that is complex and there are no easy solutions.
