My 25% Grocery Savings Rule In Action-Part 1-Intro
Published December 10th, 2008
Readers, you’ve asked for it–a how-to guide for my 25% grocery savings rule. This is a system I’ve been using for the last couple of years, and have literally saved thousands of dollars. It has worked for me–and it just may work for you. WARNING: Anything worth having will require some work. This system will definitely require an investment of time and energy, mostly in the planning department–but once you get the hang of it, it won’t take that much time every week.
So what’s the “rule”? In short, the bulk of the groceries and household products we buy are is what’s on sale that week for 25-60% of what they are sold for at the larger grocery chains. And no–I’m not talking about junk food, and all pre-prepared foods, I’m talking a lot of whole foods. I’m talking about planning ahead, knowing your prices like the back of your hand, keeping a well-stocked pantry, and combining sales with coupons. Even more importantly, it can involve making and eating a huge variety of dishes from around the world, and thinking outside of the “meat and potatoes” box. There’s even room for people that want to eat organic, and people who want to share their savings with those who are less fortunate than they are. Yes, in this series there is something for everyone.
Intrigued? Before you go on, please read the original My 25% Grocery Saving Rule post first. There’s important info in here about the sale rotation of certain staple food and household items, and also information on the supermarket chain structure, at least what I know of it here in Canada.

It’s a great idea. I just wish some of the New Zealand supermarkets had better sales on regularly, otherwise I find I can’t get what I want on sale. Ah well, there are always substitutes I have too.
