Participate in Earth Hour

Published March 28th, 2008

If you live in North America, you may have heard some buzz in the media about Earth Hour.  What is it?  It’s one hour on Saturday March 29th, 2008, from 8-9pm your local time when everyone can turn off the lights.  This simple one hour act is to support raising awareness about climate change.  This initiative was originally started in 2007, in Australia, by one of my favourite organizations, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).  It’s only been a year, but the idea, and excitement about it, has spread globally like wildfire!

Of course, they want people to be safe, so they’re suggesting turning off non-essential lights.  Not only will it save a bit of power, but it will bring people together in a show of solidarity for our environment and communities.  Some energy saving things you can do on a regular basis include turning off lights when not in use, turning off/unplugging appliances you aren’t using, using less hot water, and switching to CFL bulbs.

As far as participating in Earth Hour itself, there are many things you can do: 1) Go to www.earthhour.org to get more info and sign up officially  2) Participate in Earth Hour events planned in your community, 3) Do fun things with your loved ones at home, and 4) If you’re stuck at work, participate by powering down some of the lights and celebrating in your own way.

In the spirit of getting things started, here are my top 10 ways to celebrate Earth Hour at home:

1) Turn out the lights and snuggle with someone you love, human or animal!

2) Use the time to talk about your day, and all the things you’re thankful for

3) Get dressed warmly, go out for a walk, and look at the stars

4) Carefully light some candles, or use battery-operated lanterns, and enjoy a quiet meal with friends or loved ones.  Challenge yourself to make a delicious meal that doesn’t require energy to prepare. Some suggestions include some yummy salads, sandwiches in wraps, croissants, or baguettes, fruit, wine, pastries, and chocolate.

5) Get some glow-in-the-dark paraphernalia, even sparklers if used safely, and have some fun!

6) Meditate

7) Play some live acoustic music and sing along

8) Get a lantern and break out the playing cards, board games, or even a round of Twister!

9) Pick 5 simple things you will do from now on to reduce, reuse, or recycle–put them in writing, and display where you’ll see them every day

10)  Sit quietly and just enjoy the rare sound of silence

What will you do to participate in Earth Hour?
