Diary of a Labrador-A Typical Day
Published February 28th, 2008
My name is Moab, and this is my diary. I am a 7 year-old male black Lab, I have a sister named Naula, and a mom and dad whom I love very much. Today I’m going to document a day in my life. My mom always wonders what is going on in my furry head, so I’ll tell you!
7am - There goes the radio…I like this song…mom always sings along. Time for dad to get up–this means I get up next to mom and snuggle in on his pillow and Naula hops up on the other side. Last year mom and dad got a giant bed so all 4 of us could fit on it. For many years we had a double bed: Naula and I always had room to stretch out and sleep great, but I don’t think any humans did. There is a lot of room on the bed, but we both usually sleep on dad’s side at night, because mom kicks in her sleep, we come up and snuggle with her in the morning when it’s safe!
7:45am - Dad’s heading off to work, hugs and kisses all around! Mom is getting up now. I usually sit in the hallway and watch her when she’s brushing her teeth. She always smiles and talks to me. When she hops in the shower it’s my turn to get up on the bed, fluff the duvet into a giant pile, and lie on top of it until mom’s ready to go downstairs. She thinks this is really cute and it always gets me more hugs and kisses on top of my head!
8:25am - Mom let us into the backyard for a pee. We tear around, but it’s cold today so we come back to the door and I paw at it to let her know we’re ready to come in.
8:30am - Mom’s putting down her yoga mat. As she’s sitting there doing her breathing exercises Nauls and I wrestle, play tug of war, and jump across her to try to get her attention and have some fun. Usually she tunes us out, but today she closed the glass doors and left us on the other side. This ruins our fun as we stare at her sitting quietly on the other side of the door. I push my head against the door until it opens, come in, give mom a kiss on the cheek to say sorry, and lie down. Nauls comes in too and sits next to her. We watch her stretching patiently until she’s done.
9am - We’re going for a walk now instead of lunchtime! Yeah! That means that mom is working from home today! We all get bundled up, and mom gets a poo bag and some yummy cookies from the cupboard. Nauls picks up one of her favourite sticks from the front porch and off we go. It’s fun, lots of stuff to sniff today. We have to sit at every corner before we cross the road–but at least we get a cookie!
9:30am - That was a fun walk, now time for breakfast. Mom is getting everything ready. She’s putting our medicine and supplements right on our food (Naula and I both have hip dysplasia–that’s how my mom ended up rescuing us). Here comes the food. Yummy…and it’s gone. I’m still hungry, maybe next time I should try chewing it? Oh well.
9:45am - Mom has turned on the computer, time for her to work and us to nap.
12pm - Mom is making herself some lunch. I should wander over to the kitchen, she’s cutting up some veggies, I’m sure she’ll drop something. Score! Half a mushroom! Now if only she would drop her omelette. I want more food, but I get a hug instead–that’s cool–any kind of attention is good for me. After lunch, Naula goes to lie on the futon, and I go to find a sunny patch to lie in upstairs.
2pm - Time for a break. Mom puts her coat on and we all walk to the mailbox. I love going to the mailbox. So many smells, so little time to pee on everything!
2:15pm - Back to work for mom. Nauls and I engage in a game of tug-of-war. Naula pulled the stuffed bunny’s ear off, so we’ve had enough for now. Time to just stare at mom while she’s typing away. She always smiles at me, and I wag my tail, I’ll hop up on the sofa with her.
4pm - Snack time…for mom. Mmm…she’s having some leftover pasta from last night…it looks really good. It’s got a cream sauce, so I doubt we’ll get any, wait….wait…now she’s going for an apple. She saved a couple of small pieces and gave us some when she was finished eating. She only gives us a bit of food when she’s done. She apparently doesn’t think it’s socially acceptable for us to drool on her lap while she’s eating…I wonder why…
6pm - Mom asks “Who’s hungry?” We jump up and run around like we’ve won the lottery! First we have to go outside and do our business, I never waste any time because I love dinner. We eat, and then we search and lick our empty bowls several times–just in case we missed something the first five times we did it.
7pm - Now we watch mom make the humans’ dinner. As usual, butterfingers drops something while she’s chopping. Nauls and I each score some carrot, and I even got a giant piece of broccoli. It was so big that I didn’t really know what to do with it. Mom just looked down and laughed at me. She stopped what she was doing, and broke it up so me and Nauls could share it.
8:05pm - I hear the garage door opening! Dad is home! Today is one of his long days, I’m glad it’s not every day. More hugs and kisses all around. Mom and dad eat right away. Naul and I watch carefully to see if anything drops or if they are feeling generous. No dice.
8:30pm - We go down to the basement, and dad throws the ball for us since his missed the walks today. I love him… and my tennis ball.
10:15pm - One last bathroom break before bed. I don’t want the day to end, so I take my time…but then I get cold so I give the signal to go back inside.
10:30pm - Bedtime. More goodnight hugs and kisses for everyone, specially me and Nauls. Naula doesn’t mind the kisses, but doesn’t really like the hugs. Me, I eat it all up. I LOVE hugs! Nauls and I take our spots on dad’s side of the bed away from mom’s sleep kicking. Today was a good day, I’m happy. I wonder if I’ll dream about more food….
